The Donington Decider, as it was billed, of the British GT series at the weekend saw the Volkswagen Racing Cup Donington Rounds 2017 at the Leicestershire circuit. Going into this final event, the championship was still open, so this would be the Donington Decider, as it was for several series.
Qualifying saw Stephen Johansen take pole from Bobby Thompson and Owen Walton. Championship contender Thompson managed to take the lead in the race and the win, with Johansen hanging on for second place, and Jamie Bond taking third to keep the championship title battle going to the final race. Paul Dehadray was on pole from Darelle Wilson, and Matthew Wilson in third. Of the championship contenders, Bond was in seventh, directly ahead of Thompson in ninth. Wilson took the win, and Thompson made his way through the field for a second place, the fastest lap and the championship. Tom Walker joined Wilson and Thompson on the podium.
Congratulations to Team Hard’s Bobby Thompson, the Miltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup champion of 2017. The Volkswagen Cup has a reputation for fun and friendliness, so I’m sure that the celebrations went long in to the evening on Sunday!
