Last weekend at Brands Hatch saw the Formula Ford Festival 2015, one of the big events on the BRSCC calendar for the year. The weekend sees a series of races in heats for the Formula Ford title, including a final. Formula Ford is a series that has been a key part in the career of many great drivers, with Jenson Button, Johnny Herbert, Mark Webber and Eddie Irvine all being previous competitors. As well as the stars of the future, the series also sees some familiar names racing, and Tiff Needell, as famous now for his television presenting as his racing – he was briefly a Formula One driver – seemed to enjoy crossing the line at the end of the race, and looked equally happy on the podium.
It was good to see Wayne Boyd – from Templepatrick, just down the road from my home town of Larne – win heat one. Wayne had won the festival in 2008, and is certainly experienced in the series. Stephen Daly took heat two, with Michael Adams winning heat three, although another good result for County Antrim with Jonny McMullan from Belfast finishing second. The semi finals were up next, and then the final. It was another good race for Wayne Boyd, who took the win and became the first to win the series twice at Brands Hatch. As well as the Formula Ford series, there was a chance to watch historic Formula Ford, with competitors like Martin Donnelly as well as Tiff Needell racing in the Formula Ford Masters series.
In addition, there were plenty of other support races. The superb Fiesta Junior Championship saw its final rounds of the year over the weekend, as well as the Pinto championship and the Sports 2000 series on display.
The Formula Ford Festival is an excellent weekend of sport, definitely worth a visit. Here are a few more photos…
