Ginetta GT4 Supercup Rockingham Event 2016

The Ginetta GT4 Supercup Rockingham Event 2016, as part of the BTCC weekend, like the other series there endured conditions on Saturday that seemed more like a tropical storm than a British summer, with dark skies, torrential rain and strong winds ending what had been an otherwise changeable day. However, the awful conditions were not enough to stop either the qualifying or first race of the Ginetta GT4 Supercup.

After having such a good season, Tom Wrigley’s luck in the first race was about as good as the weather, as first he was passed by Jamie Orton and Will Burns, his key title rivals, and then he drew to a halt on the fourth lap and his race ended as the safety car was deployed. Jamie Orton took the win from Will Burns, with Carl Boardley taking the third step on the podium.

Sunday saw better weather as the Ginettas took to the grid. As the order was formed by the finishing of the first race, Tom Wrigley started back of the pack, but quickly made progress, making his way by nine cars on the first lap. Wrigley was soon back near the front of the race, but had a coming together with Burns that saw Wrigley’s race ended and the red flag brought out. Jamie Orton took his second win of the weekend from Tom Hibbert and Will Burns.

The final race of the weekend saw Mark Davies on pole, of which he took full advantage, leading to the chequered flag, with Will Burns and Jamie Orton again on the podium.

Although Tom Wrigley continues to lead the championship, his advantage has been much reduced this weekend, keeping the title fight exciting for the Silverstone and Brands Hatch rounds.
