Esteban Gutierrez, or Esteban Gutiérrez to include the appropriate accent, enjoyed 2013 as a rookie in Formula One, driving for the Sauber team. His full name is Esteban Manuel Gutiérrez Gutiérrez, and just in case you were wondering about the double Gutiérrez in there, this just means that both his father and mother had the same surname.
Esteban won the Formula BMW Europe championship in 2008, becoming, at the age of 17, the youngest ever Mexican motor racer to win an international championship. This is when I first saw him race, when he ended up on the podium at the Formula BMW event in Silverstone in 2008. He went on to win the inaugural GP3 championship in 2010, and moved into GP2, where he was partnered with Jules Bianchi for the 2011 season. Esteban had his first test in a Formula One car back in December 2009, as part of the prize for winning the Formula BMW championship. He was appointed the Sauber test and reserve driver in September 2010, and it looked like he may get his first drive in 2011 when Sergio Perez was too ill to drive. However, he lost out to Pedro de la Rossa on that occasion, although another bout of illness for Perez at the Indian Grand Prix in 2012 saw Esteban pilot the car through the first Free Practice session. It was announced at the end of the 2012 season that he would be promoted to a race seat, alongside Nico Hulkenburg, a completely new line up for the team, with both current drivers, Perez and Kobayashi, leaving the team. Esteban managed a points finish with a seventh place in Japan.
For 2014, Esteban retained the Sauber drive, and was be partnered by veteran Adrian Sutil. However, the 2015 line up for Sauber did not feature Esteban, and he did not compete in F1 that year. 2016 saw him return with the new Haas team, but was replaced for 2017.
