Last weekend saw the 2016 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, as the Formula One circus made its way to the Northamptonshire circuit for its annual visit. As the F1 leaderboard gets closer, this was the opportunity for Lewis Hamilton to close the gap on his team mate and current championship leader, Nico Rosberg. Lewis has a good track record at Silverstone, and started this year on good form setting the fastest time in both Free Practice sessions on Friday.
Although Lewis also set the fastest time in FP3 on Saturday morning, the session was overshadowed by a heavy crash by Sauber’s Marcus Ericsson which saw him taken to hospital for checks, and meant that he did not take part in qualifying.
The last of the three parts of qualifying looked like another comfortable top position for Lewis before his time was deleted after the stewards spotted that he had all four tyres off the road when setting the time, meaning that he had a single lap to set pole, and he did not disappoint. There were cheers from the crowd as the British driver set the fastest time.
The weekend had generally been sunny but with some changeable conditions, and Sunday saw a downpour just before the race, meaning that the race started behind the safety car. Lewis managed the getaway well after the safety car period ended and comfortably led to victory, with Nico Rosberg and Max Verstappen swapping places for the other two podium steps. Nico finished second on the track, but a post race penalty for his radio messages put him in third place, and means that there is now just one point between the Mercedes drivers.
Meanwhile, here are a few photos from the Formula One action.
