Romain Grosjean made his way through various levels of Renault racing and into Formula Three before joining the ART GP2 team in 2008. In 2009, the “Crashgate” incident in Singapore involving Nelson Piquet Jr gave Romain the opportunity to debut in Formula One for the remainder of the season. 2010 saw a return to GP2 and various sports cars series, before winning GP2 in 2011 whilst being the Lotus F1 test driver.
This success saw Romain promoted to a Formula One drive for 2012, which was filled with some controversy due to a number of collisions, particularly early in the race, which resulted in a one race ban for him, and famously earned him the description of being a “first lap nutcase” from fellow driver Mark Webber. However, 2013 saw a return to form for Romain, including third places in Bahrain, the same place that he occupied in 2012, Korea, Japan and India, and a second place in the US Grand Prix. Romain’s team mate at Lotus had been former world champion Kimi Raikkonen, although for 2014, that changed to Pastor Maldonado.
The season was much less successful than previous years for Romain at Lotus, with eighth places in Spain and Monaco being his only points of the season. He stayed at Lotus for 2015, alongside Pastor, before moving to the new Haas team in 2016. The team retained Romain for the 2017, 2018 and 2019 seasons.
