I am reliably informed that today is World Polar Bear Day, and as such it seems an appropriate day to share this relatively recent video from Toronto Zoo of a polar bear cub who was born in November 2013 being introduced to the snow for the first time. It is a very cute little cub, and looks more cute and cuddly than the fully grown types who are the giants of the arctic.
Of course, the arctic is named after the bear – from Arktos, the bear in greek – rather than the bear being named after the place. The ursus arctos is the brown bear, with the ursus martimus being the polar bear, meaning the sea bear, given their ability to swim well and long distances, with swims of more than 200 miles being recorded.
Happy Polar Bear day to you!
