The term “prog rock concept album” has, in the past and particularly in the 1970s, been used to described some rather unusual – and often quite long – pieces of music, with various themes that might not naturally appear to lend themselves to rock music. I am a fan of rock music in general including prog rock – I wrote recently about seeing Camel – although some of the concept albums are too much even for me. If you are a fan of concept albums, then you will be pleased to hear that a new opus will be with us soon, from Finnish guitarist Tuomas Holopainen, most famously from the band Nightwish. His first solo project will be an album called “Music Inspired By The Life And Times Of Scrooge”. The Scrooge in the title is not the one of Dickens fame, but rather Scrooge McDuck, the Disney character.
The album is based on the graphic novel, The Life And Times Of Scrooge McDuck, which tells the tale of the origin of the character. The first track from the album – A Lifetime of Adventure – has been complete, and a video made. However, you will need to wait until mid April 2014 to get a copy of the whole album.
If you are a fan of Scrooge McDuck, or of Prog Rock, then you might want to watch the video. The music is actually rather good.
